Anna flee to Mersham to work as a housemaid because their fortune was stolen and her family lost everything. When Anna moved to Mersham, the house keeper knew Anna didn't had any experience as a housemaid but she still hired her because they where in ruin. She and Mr. Proom, the butler, where very impressed whith Anna's work. They knew she wasn't the kind of girl that had to get her hands dirty to get what she wanted or needed, but still she was a very good maid. The narrator of the story doesn't participate at all in the story but knows everyone's feelings and knows all the story. This is known as an omniscient narrator. I know this because the narrator has never interfered in the story but still knows everything detailed, what characters feel, think and do.

 
After the Russian Revolution, Anna wants to work as a house maid, instead of hiding at Ms. Pinny's house. Ms. Pinny doesn't want Anna to work becaue English households are not free like Russian ones. Anna really wants to go out but Ms. Pinny doesn't let her.
